21.05.202600:30:00UTC+00Japan’s Composite PMI Eases in May, Signaling Softer Expansion in Private Sector

Japan’s Manufacturing & Services Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) eased in May 2026, pointing to a slower pace of expansion in the country’s private sector activity on a month-over-month basis. The composite indicator slipped to 51.10 in May from 52.20 in April 2026.

Despite the decline, the PMI reading remains above the 50-point threshold that separates expansion from contraction, indicating that business activity is still growing, albeit more moderately than in the previous month. The data, updated on 21 May 2026, show that April had marked a stronger improvement compared with March, while May’s figures suggest that momentum has cooled.

On a month-over-month comparison, the latest reading reflects a loss of pace in both manufacturing and services, highlighting a more cautious operating environment for Japanese firms as they navigate the early stages of the new quarter. Investors and policymakers are likely to watch upcoming data closely to assess whether May’s moderation proves temporary or signals a more sustained softening in economic activity.
