24.03.202611:14:37UTC+00Canada Small Business Confidence Plunges in March

Canada's CFIB Business Barometer long‑term index, which measures 12‑month forward expectations for business performance, fell to 55.8 in March 2026 from 65.3 in February, when it had reached a more than three‑year high. The sharp decline reflects the immediate impact of higher energy prices and rising inflation expectations following the outbreak of war in the Middle East, which disrupted energy exports from the region.

As a result, confidence dropped markedly in the transportation and housing sector (down 7.6 points to 53.8) due to higher fuel costs, and in agriculture (down 4.6 points to 54.6) as surging natural gas and helium prices threatened fertilizer supply. At the same time, sentiment also weakened in professional services (down 4.1 points to 59.4) and construction (down 1.9 points to 57.3).
