U.S. stocks remained relatively unchanged on Tuesday as investors assessed quarterly earnings reports and Consumer Price Index (CPI) data. The December CPI report revealed that both month-on-month and year-on-year core inflation figures were lower than anticipated. This outcome strengthened market expectations for two interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve this year, with an increased likelihood of the first cut occurring in April, following the report.

Among industry sectors, energy and communication services led the gains, while financials lagged behind. Notable stock movements included Alphabet's increase of over 1%, Oracle's 1.1% rise, and Netflix advancing by 1.4%. Conversely, Visa declined by 2.9% and Mastercard fell by 2.7%, continuing their downturn after President Trump proposed capping credit card interest rates at 10% for one year.

The commencement of the earnings season saw JPMorgan's shares dip by approximately 0.6%, despite the bank surpassing both earnings and revenue expectations. Bank of New York Mellon (BNYM) eased by 0.1% as its performance did not meet investor expectations. Delta Air Lines experienced a slight decline of almost 0.2% after predicting its adjusted earnings per share for the year to be between $6.50 and $7.50, falling short of analysts’ prediction of $7.25.
